Archaeological investigations were carried out by the writer in 2000 as part of the R161 realignment and widening, Trim–Navan road, at a possible tree-ring/enclosure in the grounds of Bective House (Excavations 2000, No. 746, 00E0022). No archaeological material was disclosed. The client wished to carry out further investigations in 2005. Two test-holes were excavated by the consulting engineers and the work was monitored.
Test Hole 1 was 3.4m by 0.7m by 0.8; Test Hole 2 was 3m by 0.7m by 0.8m. No material of an archaeological nature was disclosed by the monitor. The trees were felled by machine and this work was also monitored. Again no archaeological material was disclosed. After the tree clearance was completed, eight trenches were opened by machine, a centre-line with alternating offsets at 10m intervals. No archaeological material was disclosed by the testing.
