The site was excavated in August 2005 as part of the programme of resolution of archaeological sites on the route of the proposed Galway–Mayo gas pipeline. Monitoring of topsoil-stripping under licence number 05E0584 (see No. 1096 above) revealed a burnt-mound spread in an area of bog margin. Excavation was therefore undertaken. The spread consisted of limestone and was crescent-shaped. It had dimensions of 10m by 12m and a depth of 0.6m. When removed, a timber-lined trough with intact timber stakes was exposed. It measured 1.65m by 1.2m and was centrally placed beneath the mound. No other features were identified. No finds were recovered from the site and dating of the features awaits the results of radiocarbon analysis.
