Mayo County Council have widened a stretch of road on the outskirts of Ballina town known locally as the Sligo road. During monitoring a spread of burnt stone and charcoal was uncovered in a low-lying area north of the existing road. The deposit of burnt stone had been disturbed by land drainage. It reached a maximum depth of 0.6m and was associated with an unlined, small subcircular trough cut into subsoil. Charcoal samples from the trough fill will be used to radiocarbon date the site. No small finds were uncovered.
