Monitoring of peat excavation in advance of the construction of the Corrib natural gas pipeline from Glengad Headland to the terminal site at Bellanaboy Bridge, Bellagelly South, Co. Mayo, was undertaken from February to July 2005. Very little excavation work was actually undertaken along the line of the pipeline route. The monitoring team was supplemented by Ms Greta Byrne of the CĂ©ide Fields Interpretative Centre. Ms Byrne was retained as a specialist consultant to the project in order to advise the monitoring archaeologist on best practice in a peatland context. Nothing of any archaeological significance was noted during the programme of monitoring and the project was abandoned in early July.
