The Coogue and Larganboy–Kilgarriff group water supply scheme involved 16km of pipelaying near Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo, in the summer of 2005. Groundworks associated with this scheme were monitored. Pipeline was laid within undulating pastureland, low-lying marsh, existing roadway and roadside verge. The pipeline was diverted away from eight monuments which would have been impacted on by the scheme. Two further areas within zones of archaeological constraint were tested. Testing beside SMR 92:13, an enclosure, did not uncover anything of archaeological significance. Testing near SMR 92:36, another enclosure, revealed part of the upper levels of an enclosing ditch. This feature was preserved in situ and the pipeline was rerouted away from the constraint area. No other archaeological artefacts or features were found during monitoring of this scheme.
