Monitoring of peat excavation in advance of the construction of the Corrib natural gas field reception terminal at Bellagelly South, Co. Mayo, was undertaken from late December 2004 until July 2005. Throughout the peat excavation programme, all groundworks across the footprint of the development were monitored. The monitoring team was supplemented by Ms Greta Byrne of the Céide Fields Interpretative Centre. Ms Byrne was retained as a specialist consultant to the project in order to advise the monitoring archaeologist on best practice in a peatland context. Nothing of any archaeological significance was encountered. The peat excavations and the monitoring programme were abandoned at the beginning of July 2005.
