Pre-development testing was carried out on 7 and 8 November 2005 at a site in advance of its development at Ballyshingadaun townland, The Neale, Co. Mayo. The proposed development was partially located within the constraint area for a ruined windmill, which was located over 40m outside the proposed development site. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a dwelling house, complete with domestic sheds and out-offices, the installation of a proprietary wastewater treatment unit and the construction of an associated percolation area. No archaeological features were visible within the proposed development site.
Three trenches were excavated. These measured 80m, 49m and 24.9m long, 0.9–1.5m wide and 0.1–1.1m deep. Below the topsoil was an area of fill, sterile natural subsoils (grey/orange/brown friable silt loam and grey/orange/brown firm clay loam) and bedrock. One fragment of modern glass was recovered from the topsoil. The fill was probably the result of field clearance and/or land reclamation. Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed.
