Monitoring was undertaken along two stretches of the natural gas transmission pipeline from Bellanaboy Bridge, Co. Mayo, to Claregalway, Co. Galway, during May and June 2005. The route of the pipeline extended from the Bellanaboy Bridge terminal in north Co. Mayo in a south-easterly direction into east Co. Galway and connected with the reception terminal to the Pipeline to the West at an above-ground installation near Craughwell. The route passes through extensive tracts of bogland in Co. Mayo. The construction of the pipeline involved topsoil removal over a distance of 150km and within a working strip of 30m.
In Co. Mayo, a short stretch of the route was monitored from Road Crossing 90 in Pollraddy to Road Crossing 85 in Grallagh. Topsoil removal along the remainder of the pipeline route was monitored by staff from ACS Ltd.
Nine sites were identified altogether. Two of the sites were located in Co. Mayo, a single pit and associated furrow in Knockroe and a small group of shallow pits in Carrowkeel.
See entry No. 546 above for discussion of the sites in Co. Galway.
