Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was undertaken in advance of the M1/Dundalk western bypass between March 2004 and February 2005. Five areas along the route containing isolated features were excavated under the monitoring licence. They consisted of a number of isolated pits. Four substantial archaeological sites were uncovered during the monitoring. They were a fulacht fiadh at Newtownbalregan (Excavations 2004, No. 1119, 04E0817), a pit cemetery at Faughart Lower (Excavations 2004, No. 1107, 04E0811), a souterrain at Tateetra (see No. 1089, Excavations 2005, A010/001) and a cist at Carn More (see No. 1044, Excavations 2005, A010/002). These sites were excavated between May 2004 and January 2005.
