It is proposed to construct a dwelling house in the garden of 16 William Street. The site of the proposed development was depicted as an open space on all maps consulted and no structures were identified.
Three test-trenches were excavated during a site assessment carried out in November 2004 (Excavations 2004, No. 1094, 04E1400). Garden soil was exposed in all three trenches. The majority of finds recovered consisted of post-medieval pottery, although an occasional sherd of medieval pottery was also recovered. Each trench was excavated to a maximum depth of 1.7m. Natural subsoil was identified only in a small portion of Trenches 1
and 3.
As natural subsoil was not identified in all three trenches, it was recommended that all subsurface works be monitored. The garden soil was, however, removed from this site and the foundations were laid in the absence of an archaeologist on 24 June 2005. The site was inspected on 27 June 2005. The sections visible within this site were inspected and there appeared to be no negative archaeological impact. Garden soil was visible in all sections and natural subsoil was not visible at the time of the inspection.
