An impact assessment of a proposed development at the old Schoolhouse on Church Street, Granard, Co. Longford, was undertaken in September 2005. The assessment included the results of pre-development testing. The development envisages the alteration and extension of the existing school building.
The schoolhouse is located within the zone of archaeological potential surrounding Granard. The site is located on Church Street to the south-west of Main Street. Church Street slopes steeply uphill to the west. The schoolhouse grounds are cut into the hill on the north side of Church Street opposite St Mary’s RC church.
Two trenches were excavated across the footprint of the proposed extension and nothing of any archaeological significance was recorded.
