An impact assessment was undertaken for a new machinery yard proposed by Limerick County Council in Killmallock. The proposed development site lies partially within the zone of archaeological potential for an enclosure and a castle. Six test-trenches were mechanically excavated on the site. An area was also hand tested in the south-eastern corner of the site in the vicinity of the possible location of the northern portion of the enclosure. One feature of archaeological significance was noted in this trench. It comprised an irregular metalled surface 3.5m north-south by 1.5m. It was roughly delimited by a number of large stones, which averaged 0.2m in diameter. A second smaller metalled surface was also revealed in the trench and measured 1.5m north-south by 1m. The stones were laid down in a haphazard way and were not oriented in a particular direction. No other features of archaeological significance were revealed.
The feature is located partially within the footprint of on of the proposed buildings. It was recommended that the building be relocated within the development to accommodate the preservation in situ of the feature. If this is not possible, then the excavation of the feature was recommended.
