Riverine archaeological assessment took place as part of the proposed Limerick southern ring road (Phase II), Southern Contract. A pre-disturbance archaeological assessment of a 200m stretch of the southern shoreline of the River Shannon was undertaken and the survey area extended across the southernmost margin of Castlemungret townland.
Systematic visual inspection of the riverbed, intertidal and foreshore elements of the River Shannon were carried out at the proposed river crossing. A comprehensive magnetometer survey by hand-held metal detection was also carried out where possible. No archaeologically significant material was revealed.
