Testing was undertaken at the site of an extension at Colaiste Mhuire secondary school at Church Street, Askeaton. The development was located within the zone of archaeological potential for Askeaton, immediately to the east of the Anglican St Mary’s Church and graveyard. Incorporated into St Mary’s Church are a late 13th-century belfry and the site of the original parish church.
Two test-trenches were opened on the site of the extension, which was formerly occupied by an earlier school building. In both trenches bedrock was very close to the surface, with only a thin cover of topsoil. The absence of any stratigraphy may be accounted for by previous groundworks for the earlier school building, having resulted in the clearance of any archaeological deposits.
