The proposed development of a two-storey office and retail block and adjacent parking area is located along Park Lane, Portarlington, at the rear of Dunne’s pharmacy, which fronts onto Main Street. The Urban Archaeological Survey (Bradley and King 1986) indicates that archaeological deposits are unlikely to be uncovered along the Main Street frontage due to the construction of houses here in the 18th and 19th centuries. It suggests, however, that such deposits may well be preserved in the rear gardens of these properties (i.e. in the area of the current development).
The proposed development is located outside the archaeological constraint around the medieval town of Portarlington (SMR 5:31). Trial-trenching along the length of the development revealed nothing of archaeological significance.
