The archaeological assessment of Contract 2, Testing Area 9, of the M7 Portlaoise–Castletown/M8 Portlaoise–Cullahill motorway scheme involved the mechanical excavation of 72 test-trenches. These had a combined length of 3108.34 linear metres, resulting in a total excavated area of 6682.93m2, or c. 23.92% of the total area (27,940m2). The testing area is situated in the townland of Lismore at Chainage 12500–13100 and consisted of five separate fields: Fields 533, 536, 537, 540 and 541.
An archaeological site was recorded in Field 533. This has been designated Lismore 2 and consisted of four distinct areas of activity. There were two deposits in Trench 3, five pits in Trench 8 with burnt-mound material in their fills, five pits in Trench 19 and a pit filled with burnt-mound material in Trench 41.
