A test excavation was undertaken at The Greatheath, Portlaoise, on 1 and 2 February 2005. The site is located in a rich archaeological landscape and is within the zone of archaeological potential around SMR 13:14 (ring-barrow), 13:29(01) (chapel site), 13:29(02) (font site), 13:30(01) (ring-barrow) and 13:2 (earthwork site). Furthermore, The Greatheath has been identified as a potential archaeological landscape, given the number of specific prehistoric features in this area. Modern skeletal material was recorded by the author in 2002 outside the confines of the disused graveyard, which lies directly across the road to the west of the development site (Excavations 2002, No. 1044, 00E0894).
The excavations on the site of the proposed dwelling revealed no archaeological remains whatsoever.
