Monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of a rear extension to a retail premises was carried out at the north end of the zone of archaeological potential surrounding the historic city of Kilkenny. This development site is located outside the northern line of the medieval wall delimiting St John’s suburb. The stratigraphy uncovered consisted of a 0.8m-thick layer of topsoil containing much modern rubbish and building rubble. All excavations halted at a depth of c. 0.8m below modern ground level and the raft foundations will not involve any further reduction of the ground levels at this site. There were no archaeological features or finds recorded during monitoring.
