An assessment of a proposed single-house development at Father Hayden Road, Kilkenny, was requested. The site was of great archaeological potential: it is within the rear of a probable medieval burgage plot and 5m from the southern boundary wall of St Patrick’s graveyard, an important Early Christian ecclesiastical foundation. Testing succeeded in identifying, beneath a deep garden soil deposit, what is likely to be a substantial section of the ditch of the inner ecclesiastical enclosure. The proposed formation levels for the development were raised to provide for a 0.5m buffer above the archaeological levels and monitoring of groundworks was recommended.
