The monitoring of a holiday village development took place on 17 and 18 February 2005. It was found that much of the site’s surface had already been removed during construction works c. 150 years ago. Foundation trenches and service line excavations took place in association with the current phase of development. Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered.
Excavation into the hillside to the west and adjacent to the development (to create a level surface to retain scaffolding) revealed a possible medieval layer. This consisted of fire-reddened soil and some stone (possibly associated and in situ) at a level beneath higher modern intrusions. The layer measured 0.3m in diameter. Nothing of an artefactual nature to determine the date of this layer was found. Discussion with the developer ensured that it would not be intruded upon. This area was therefore recorded, protected and backfilled.
