Testing at this site in 2003 revealed the line of the medieval town ditch (Excavations 2003, No. 1000). The design of the development was adjusted to minimise impact upon the ditch, but it was necessary in two areas to excavate sections through the ditch to allow for the insertion of services. As a subsoil cut, the ditch measured 5.9m in width and was 1.5m deep. It was filled with a mixture of redeposited sandy clays.
Monitoring of groundworks also revealed the presence of burgage boundaries oriented north–south. These generally measured 1m in width by 0.5m deep.
Further monitoring will be carried out in 2006.
