Pre-planning assessment was undertaken at the site. Testing revealed the presence of features, several of which appeared to date to the medieval or early post-medieval periods. An apparently curvilinear ditch was uncovered that appeared to be a direct continuation of a ditch uncovered during testing of the adjacent development site, which was presumed to be the town ditch. A metalled surface with an east–west length of 40–50m was also uncovered. Finds from the surface indicate a medieval or early post-medieval date. A ditch or pit was also uncovered. A small section through the ditch yielded eight sherds of medieval pottery, including a large decorated rim.
