Monitoring of topsoil removal was carried out over three days from 29 to 31 August 2005 at Gorteen Quarry, c. 4.5 miles north-east of Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny. Topsoil-stripping of the area revealed the presence of a burnt spread, which measured 14m by 4.5m and 0.13m deep where sectioned. The spread was truncated by a modern field drain that had been associated with an overlying field boundary embankment. This site has not yet been excavated.
