Testing was undertaken at Dunnamaggan East in accordance with a condition of planning permission. Six trenches were placed within the proposed development area, in total measuring 457.5m. Four trenches were placed on a north–south axis and two on an east–west axis, revealing c. 12.5% of the area. Archaeology was present in all but one of the trenches, in the form of linear ditches and furrows containing medieval artefacts and metalworking activity, including two furnaces and a large deposit of iron slag. Finds were of pottery, nails, animal bone and slag.
The shallow nature of the depth of topsoil and the widespread nature of the archaeology means that development on this site would have a direct impact on the subsurface features. Full excavation was recommended prior to any development works.
