Test excavations and monitoring were undertaken during works for a sewage scheme at Straffan, Co. Kildare. The proposed scheme is located on the west bank of the River Liffey in an area with many monuments. It is particularly noted for the remains associated with the Anglo-Norman colonisation. A number of large estate houses also dominate the landscape.
Six trenches were mechanically excavated along the line of the proposed pipeline route on 23 September 2005, in areas of archaeological potential around a church and graveyard in Straffan village and a church and enclosure in the townland of Ardrass Lower. No archaeological features or finds were uncovered during testing. All topsoil-stripping associated with the two proposed pumping stations was monitored on a full-time basis and intermittent monitoring was carried out along the pipeline route in areas identified in the archaeological impact assessment for the proposed scheme.
