This phase of investigation concerned the monitoring of the excavation of engineers’ trial holes along the route of the proposed pipelines and at the water treatment plant and reservoir sites. The Carbury Hill component of the project was investigated under separate licences (comprising geophysical survey and archaeological test excavations). The principal focus of works on site was the monitoring of topsoil-stripping. Monitoring commenced on 5 January and carried on until 9 February; it lasted for seven days in total. The area monitored comprised the footprint of the proposed developments and the area of the temporary site offices.
All the topsoil was removed from the sites and the natural layer exposed throughout. The ground monitored appeared to be previously undisturbed. The subsoil was sterile and there was an absence of modern debris or any drainage features. The natural layer was a yellowish-grey sticky clay with few stones and at the Redhills site it was of the same composition but red in colour. No archaeological finds or features were recorded at the three sites monitored. The proposed pipeline will traverse a further number of areas of archaeological potential and these will be monitored at a later date.
