This site was identified during testing of Area 1 of Archaeological Services Contract 3, N9/N10 Kilcullen–Waterford scheme: Kilcullen to Powerstown (A021/001). Area 1 ran from Prumplestown Lower to Russellstown townlands. Test-trenches totalling c. 19,000 linear metres were excavated within Area 1 and nine areas of archaeological significance were identified (Sites 1–10; A021/006–015, Excavations 2005, Nos 729–31, 733, 738–41 and 785–6).
A single burnt-mound spread with visible dimensions of c. 10m by 6m and a depth of around 0.2m was identified in Trenches 1 and 19. Additional burnt-mound material was located in Trench 18, although this did not extend in a continuous unbroken layer and may have been a result of plough erosion or a discrete spread.
