An assessment, which included pre-development testing, was undertaken at a site in Athgarvan, Co. Kildare. The development proposals envisage the construction of 67 housing units along with associated services, car parking spaces and access roads. Seven trenches were excavated across the footprint of the development site on 7 and 8 June 2005. The recorded soil profiles were similar, with black silty sand topsoil grading to an orange/red silty sand, which were both underlain in part by sandy silty clay and sand and gravel. Small finds included occasional animal bone and small red-brick fragments, occasional modern pottery sherds and half of a corroded horseshoe. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted in any of the trenches excavated.
