Monitoring took place of the groundworks for an access route from the main road to a proposed development of five houses near Ventry, Co. Kerry. The driveway, 5.3m wide, was about 275m in length, meandering through fairly marshy, boggy land for the first 100m or so and then continuing through a better, drier pasture field.
A patchy spread of heat-fractured stones within charcoal-rich soil was noted, measuring 7.3m north-west/south-east by 2.2m and disappearing into the baulk at the south-west, c. 13m in from where the new driveway joins the road. It was found at a depth of 0.1–0.15m below ground level and, as no further excavation was to take place in this area, it was not explored further but did not appear to be more than a few centimetres deep. No further features or any finds (apart from some sherds of modern pottery in the upper field and modern rubbish near the road) were noted.
