Test excavations were carried out on 9 July 2005 in relation to planning permission regarding a dwelling house with septic tank at Dromin West, Milltown. The proposed development site lay near a ringfort, SMR 57:25, marked ‘Lisbeg’ on both editions of the OS 6-inch maps. Two trenches, forming a T-shape in plan, were excavated by mechanical excavator with toothless bucket.
Trench 1 was c. 3m wide and ran for a distance of 20m aligned north-east to south-west across the proposed site of the dwelling house. The topsoil was 0.3–0.4m in depth and consisted of a mid-brown silty loam with small to medium-sized stones. This came straight down onto the subsoil, which was a mottled beige/orange sandy silt with occasional small stones. Nothing of an archaeological nature was encountered in this trench.
Trench 2 was c. 3m wide and ran for a distance of 25m aligned north-west to south-east along the proposed route of the driveway. Topsoil was 0.25–0.3m in depth (composition the same as Trench 1), coming straight down onto the subsoil as in Trench 1. Nothing of an archaeological nature was encountered in this trench.
