A licence to carry out test-trenching of the area to be impacted on by an extension to a hotel at Castlelough, Killarney, was applied for in June 2005. The proposed development site is located c. 200m to the north of the zone of archaeological potential surrounding a castle, which is located on the tip of a small promontory extending into Castlelough Lake. However, all ground reduction works required by the construction project at this development site were carried out without notifying the consulting archaeologists. The exposed subsoil was inspected and one test-trench was excavated across an undisturbed area which will be impacted on by a proposed pipeline extending from the hotel towards the lake. There were no archaeological features or finds recorded during an inspection and test-trenching at this site.
