Monitoring was carried out during August 2004 in advance of a housing development in Carrigeendaniel, Tralee, Co. Kerry. The initial phase of topsoil-stripping revealed two areas of archaeological potential (Site 1), which were excavated during September and November 2004 (Excavations 2004, No. 735). The second phase of topsoil-stripping was carried out in January 2005 and this exposed further areas of archaeological interest.
Site 2 was excavated in February 2005 and the features exposed included a subrectangular post-built structure with associated hearth, pits and occupation spreads. The hearth was quite substantial, measuring 2.44m by 1.12m, with a maximum depth of 0.16m. It was situated outside the structure and contained much charcoal, oxidised clay, burnt bone and heat-fractured stones. Another fire setting was located c. 36m south-west of the rectangular structure. This measured 1.17m by 1.2m and the fill consisted of a charcoal-enriched sediment containing numerous heat-fractured stones. A shallow charcoal spread and five small pits were located within a 20m radius of this hearth. Post-excavation work is currently in progress and charcoal from the two sites has been submitted for radiocarbon analysis.
