Test-trenching and monitoring were undertaken on behalf of Kerry County Council in advance of the construction of the Tralee western link road. Test-trenches were excavated along the centre-line of the route and offset trenches were excavated c. 7m apart on either side of the central trench. The stripping of the entire route was also monitored. The Tralee western link road runs eastwards from the roundabout at the junction of the R551 to Ardfert and the R558 to Fenit. The proposed route is c. 2.3km in total length, running in a north-easterly direction for the first 600m before turning to run to the east for around 1.1km and finally turning south-east for the final 600m to the roundabout at Shanakill.
Three spreads of burnt and fire-cracked stone, indicative of fulachta fiadh, were identified during testing. Numerous features associated with land drainage and cultivation were revealed, but these were not of archaeological significance.
The identified archaeological features were excavated under an extension to this licence (see No. 667 below).
