Pre-development testing at a site to the rear of Keane’s Bar in Oranmore, Co. Galway, was undertaken on 21 September 2005. Two trenches were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development, which includes the demolition of the function room, restaurant, kitchen, office, north-east ground-floor bookmakers, shop and toilets in order to construct a basement carpark accessed from Castle Road and to replace the function room, kitchens, bars and restaurant. The excavated trenches revealed a thin layer of mixed rubble and hardcore bedding material directly overlying the natural, which comprised grey coarse sand and gravel with frequent small stones and occasional large stones and boulders. Occasional patches of light-yellow/brown fine silty sand were also recorded. There was also evidence of modern disturbance across the site. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
