Pre-development testing was carried out on the site of a proposed new dwelling house at Meenleana, Co. Galway, on 17 November 2005. The north-east part of the development site lies within the area of constraint around the poorly preserved remains of a large bivallate ringfort (diam. c. 50m) with intervening ditch. A tracked excavator fitted with a wide grading bucket was retained to open four trenches on the footprint of the proposed development. The grey/brown silty sand topsoil increased in thickness from 0.15m on the lower ground in the west part of the site to 0.3m on the higher ground in the east. The subsoil generally consisted of fine silty sand which varied from light-grey/brown to grey/white and orange/brown in colour. Occasional outcrops of grey medium to coarse sand and gravel were recorded on the higher ground. No archaeological material was uncovered.
