Hand testing was undertaken as part of Contract 1 of the N6 Galway–Ballinasloe road scheme (Phase 1 testing). The site was identified during the EIS as a possible ancient field system. In total 70m2 of trenching was excavated across the area. This identified a series of collapsed post-medieval walls, earlier than the current field boundaries, and a ridge and furrow system. A topographical survey was undertaken to map the extent of the field system and sections of the walls were recorded. No further work is proposed at the site.
The work was commissioned by the Galway County Council National Roads Design Office and sponsored by the National Roads Authority. RPS-MCOS Ltd acted as principal consultants for the scheme.
