Pre-development testing was undertaken in November/December 2005 in advance of a proposal to drain rainwater from a mausoleum via two drains to a soak pit in the north of the St George burial ground. The testing revealed nothing of archaeological significance in the excavation of the two drainage channels. However, the excavation of the soak pit revealed an unmarked children’s burial ground, with two infant burials uncovered. The burials, which were orientated roughly north–south, were cut into the subsoil at a depth of 0.45–0.5m. It was recommended to abandon plans of any soak pit in the area and the area of the burials was backfilled.
