Hand testing was undertaken as part of Contract 1 of the N6 Galway–Ballinasloe road scheme (Phase 1 testing). The site, all of which is to be removed during the course of construction, was identified as a series of burnt mounds. A substantial burnt mound with four other small low mounds were previously identified within the field and are listed in the Archaeological Inventory of County Galway, Vol. 1, West Galway (SMR 82:43). The largest mound was kidney-shaped in plan and measured 16m by 15m with a height of 1.1m. The smaller mounds were less than 6m in diameter, with a maximum height of 0.4m between them.
All of the burnt mounds are to be fully excavated during Phase 2 archaeological works.
The work was commissioned by Galway County Council National Roads Design Office and sponsored by the National Roads Authority. RPS-MCOS Ltd acted as principal consultants for the scheme.
