This site had been highlighted as an area of high archaeological potential based on the results of geophysical survey. Phase 1 testing confirmed the presence of an earthen bank and associated ditch, identified through geophysical survey, and a possible associated cobbled surface. Three areas of hand testing and seventeen machine-dug trenches were opened. A number of sites of archaeological interest were identified.
Area A contained a mound with associated ditch and the remains of a cobbled surface, which may represent an enclosed yard. It is likely that they represent the remnants of structures connected to the Galway Blazers. No artefacts were retrieved which would allow a date to be assigned.
In Area B, no structure was apparent, but the remains may represent part of a collapsed superstructure. The full extent of the possible pit was unknown but is likely to relate to a subcircular feature evident in the geophysical survey.
The work was commissioned by Galway County Council National Roads Design Office and sponsored by the National Roads Authority.
