Pre-development testing was carried out on 22 July 2005 at a site in advance of its development at Darrary North townland, Dunmore, Co. Galway. The proposed development, the construction of a serviced dwelling with septic tank, proprietary effluent treatment system, percolation area and garage/shed, was located within the constraint area for a moated site, which was visible a short distance to the north.
Four trenches were excavated in a pasture field to test the site. The trenches measured 33.9m, 12.7m, 31.7m and 8m long, 0.9–1.2m wide and 0.25–0.85m deep. Below the topsoil were natural subsoils (blue/grey/orange/brown loose loamy sand and gravel, orange/grey/brown friable sandy silt loam, dark-grey friable sandy loam and firm orange/brown clay loam). Three modern land drains crossed the trenches. No artefacts were recovered. The testing revealed nothing of archaeological significance.
