Hand testing was undertaken as part of Contract 1 of the N6 Galway–Ballinasloe road scheme (Phase 1 testing), to ascertain the preliminary nature, date, function and cultural associations of a site identified during the EIS and geophysical survey as an enclosure. Phase 1 testing has indicated a stone-built enclosure with two circular structures, possibly indicating house remnants, within the interior. A secure date for the site has not yet been ascertained due to the lack of stratified finds. The entire site is to be removed during the course of the construction of the proposed dual carriageway and will be fully excavated as part of Phase 2 archaeological works.
The work was commissioned by Galway County Council National Roads Design Office and sponsored by the National Roads Authority. RPS-MCOS Ltd acted as principal consultants for the scheme.
