The site was excavated in July 2005 as part of the programme of resolution of archaeological sites on the route of the proposed Galway–Mayo gas pipeline. Monitoring of topsoil-stripping under licence 05E0584 (see No. 550, Excavations 2005) revealed an area of fire-cracked sandstone. Excavation was therefore undertaken.

The spread had dimensions of 4m by 3.5m and averaged 0.2m in depth. It sealed a circular pit, 0.6m in diameter and 0.5m in depth. There was no evidence of a trough, but this may survive outside the land-take. The majority of this site is located to the west of the gas pipeline route and will remain undisturbed. No finds were recovered from the site and dating of the features awaits the results of radiocarbon analysis.
