Hand testing was undertaken as part of Contract 1 of the N6 Galway–Ballinasloe road scheme (Phase 1 testing). The site was initially identified during the EIS as a field system, well and roadway. In total, 90m2 of test-trenches were opened across the site to test various features. The features identified included a small circular stone structure, a rectangular stone structure, an animal well, a field system and a large circular enclosure with associated annexe. No evidence was uncovered for a roadway.
All archaeological material located within the area under CPO is to be excavated as part of Phase 2 archaeological works.
The work was commissioned by Galway County Council National Roads Design Office and sponsored by the National Roads Authority. RPS-MCOS Ltd acted as principal consultants for the scheme.
