Pre-development testing was carried out at the remains of a subterranean, stone-built feature at a quarry site in the townland of Ardgaineen, c. 4km north-east of Corrandulla, Co. Galway. The feature was provisionally identified as a souterrain.
The location of the feature limited the area which could be tested. An area measuring 4.7m (north–south) by 23.5m around the feature was cleaned back mechanically and by hand. This showed that the souterrain did not extend any further north and that there were no apparent features associated with it. A grinding stone or axe was identified in situ at the base of the cut of the souterrain.
It was recommended that the feature be fully excavated.
