Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was carried out on the site of a housing development at Rosscah View, Kesh, Co. Fermanagh. The site had been in pasture, although initial construction had already commenced prior to archaeological involvement at the north-western corner of the development. In this area a number of trial-trenches were opened, where possible, to determine if any archaeological deposits were present. Complete removal of topsoil was also undertaken in an area that was designated as the next phase of construction, while the remaining areas are to be stripped during further construction phases.
The trial-trenching and topsoil removal was undertaken using a mechanical digger fitted with a flat toothless bucket. The topsoil measured 0.2m in depth and directly overlay the natural subsoil, which consisted of a light-yellow coarse sandy clay. There were no archaeological deposits uncovered during either the trial-trenching or the topsoil removal in this phase of work on the site.
