Testing, as part of an assessment, was undertaken for a proposed extension to Templeogue Community Bridge Club, Templeogue House, Templeogue, Dublin 22. Templeogue House is listed as the site of a 16th-century castle. In an excavation by the late Leo Swan in 1996 (Excavations 1996, No. 144, 96E0010), 17th-century structural remains and a large amount of late medieval and early post-medieval glass were found, and in 1998 Rónán Swan found a ditch thought to be related to an 18th-century water garden (Excavations 1998, No. 224, 98E0221).
The 2005 programme revealed extensive subsurface disturbance related to persistent rebuilding at Templeogue House from the 18th century onwards. A wall foundation was also found, and this is likely to date to the 18th century or later. No remains associated with the castle were found.
Further works at Templeogue House are taking place, in relation to modifications to the carpark in front of the house and to an extension behind the house near a tower. These are ongoing and will be reported on in 2006.
