Seven test-trenches were excavated across the area by Bernice Molloy (see No. 538 above) in order to ascertain the nature of a number of geophysical anomalies identified in a survey by Joanna Leigh of Margaret Gowen & Co. Ltd. The development was located within the confines of the site of Tallaght village, to the north of St Mary’s Priory and c. 250m north-east of St Maelruan’s Church and graveyard. St Maelruan’s Church (built in 1829) is medieval in origin and previous investigations in the area have confirmed the presence of a medieval enclosure with associated features. Cartographic evidence indicates that the site of the development was originally in the lands of the Archbishop’s Palace.
Given the proximity of this development to these monuments, there was a requirement that the topsoil-stripping be monitored under licence. This was undertaken, but nothing of archaeological significance was recorded.
