The site lies within the townland of and the zone of archaeological potential for Tallaght. It is located in a small field directly to the north of St Mary’s Priory and the priory wall forms the southern boundary of the site. It is c. 220m to the north-east of St Maelruan’s Church and graveyard, which has medieval origins. A programme of geophysical survey was carried out within the development area in September 2004 by Joanna Leigh of Margaret Gowen & Co. Ltd (licence 04R136). No clear responses of an archaeological nature were identified during the survey, but a number of anomalies were noted which may have been archaeological in origin. Test excavation was carried out as a result of this recommendation at the request of the client. Seven test-trenches were mechanically excavated across the footprint of the proposed development in March 2005. Nothing of archaeological significance was found during the excavation. Due to the proximity of the RMP sites to the proposed development site, monitoring was recommended. This took place under the direction of Franc Myles in October 2005 (see No. 539, Excavations 2005).
