An assessment was carried out at the site of a proposed residential scheme. The development site lies within the constraint area of the settlement of Kilgobbin, which includes the remains of Kilgobbin Castle and a former inn of late 17th-century date. Previous investigations carried out on the site included a geophysical survey (02R079) and monitoring (Excavations 2002, No. 608, 02E0906) and an excavation (Excavations 2002, No. 605, 02E1173 ext.) by Ines Hagen.

Seven test-trenches were mechanically excavated across the footprint of the proposed development to a depth of 0.4–0.5m. These revealed 32 features of archaeological potential, the majority of which appeared to be the remains of linear cuts, probably representing ditches and drains. Though the dates for a number of the features identified remains uncertain, at least five appeared to be ditches dating to the medieval period.
