Monitoring of topsoil removal was carried out on the adjoining sites off Ballyogan Road, and the ‘Gallops’, between September 2005 and January 2006. The development site to the rear of the Ballyogan Road shops was much disturbed, having been previously scarped and used for subsequent dumping of spoil from earlier nearby developments. The site included a portion of the townland boundary between Kilgobbin and Murphystown comprising a U-shaped ditch and hedgerow. No other archaeological features were recorded.
The adjoining Gallops site lay entirely within Murphystown and within the grounds of what was the Glencairn Demesne. The narrow band of topsoil overlay a sterile orange/brown clay in some portions and, more commonly, a very loose sandy surface reflecting the granite bedrock. No archaeological features were recorded.
